As seen in the video, when presented with the question, many women would rather choose to encounter a bear than a man.

The answer might not have been unanimous, but most women across the social media landscape also opted for the bear.

While some men agreed and understood that women would instead choose the bear, others were angered by the question and the majority’s response.

Some people did not fully understand the meaning behind the hypothetical question.

Whether anyone (of any gender) would rather come face-to-face with another human being or a predatory animal is not the question.

The viral question was focused on emphasising the dangers that women experience in the world as a result of gender-based violence.

Now for some statistics

According to a 2020 Stats SA report on gender-based violence, GBV is disproportionately directed against women and girls.

This does not mean that men cannot be victims of GBV, but statistics show South Africa has one of the highest rates of violence against women and girls in the world.

In 2023, the National Library of Medicine reported that one woman is raped every three hours in South Africa.

South Africa is considered to be the rape capital of the world, with 10,818 rape cases reported in the first quarter of 2022.

The rate at which intimate partners in this country kill women is five times higher than the global average, which means it doesn’t always have to be a random man you encounter in those woods for it to be scary...
