GMA Extra: The 7th annual Bikers for Mandela Day

International Mandela Day will be celebrated next Monday, 18 July on Nelson Mandela’s birthday. The idea of the day is for individuals, groups, companies and communities to serve their communities on this day, in the form of a project or action that would bring upliftment. The call for 67 minutes of community service was made to honour the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent serving others.

GMA EXTRA 9 JULY 2016

The 7th annual Bikers for Mandela Day will depart this week, to do service in several communities to honour the memory of Madiba

BACKGROUND: International Mandela Day will be celebrated next Monday, 18 July on Nelson Mandela’s birthday. The idea of the day is for individuals, groups, companies and communities to serve their communities on this day, in the form of a project or action that would bring about upliftment. The call for 67 minutes of community service was made to honour the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent serving others.

Madiba’s personal secretary, Zelda la Grange, is also an avid biker, and to set the example, came up with the idea of an annual bike ride, to take the call for community service to far flung communities. This has become an annual event and this year, the 7th Bikers for Mandela Day will depart Johannesburg on 14 July.

The theme for Bikers for Mandela Day 2016 is: “Inspiring Confidence in Victims and Survivors of Gender Based Violence”.

According to Zelda: "We have crossed over 12 000 km’s since the inception of this initiative in 2010 and assisted over 20 charitable organisations through Bikers for Mandela day.  We look forward to paying tribute to Madiba’s unwavering legacy once again.  We believe that every small action of goodwill leads to a larger movement in the right direction,”
