There were 2.28 million cases of diabetes in South Africa in 2015.

In 2016, the South African Health News Service reported that in South Africa, 3.85 million people have diabetes.

This is as a result of the unhealthy lifestyle that many South African live. Lack of exercise, unhealthy eating, and family history put one at risk of the disease. Other risks include having high cholesterol or other fats in the blood, having high blood pressure or heart disease, having given birth to a baby that weighed over four kilograms at birth, or having had gestational diabetes during pregnancy.

But the good thing is that diabetes can be managed.

Diet

Apart from taking medication, eating healthy food is very important. However, it's also important to note when you eat and how much you eat. Diabetes South Africa (DSA) recommends that those who suffer with the disease visit dietitians who can work out a meal plan which is suitable for their needs.

Exercise

There are many ways in which one can exercise, including walking and running. Exercise helps one maintain a healthy weight and lowers blood glucose.

Stress management

Those who suffer from diabetes have to ensure that they keep their stress levels low, because stress affects blood glucose levels.

Healthy lifestyle

It is also important to stay away from things that can cause harm to your health such as smoking and excessive drinking.

Below are signs of diabetes:

Frequent urination

Unexplained weight loss

Unusual thirst

Excessive fatigue

Weight gain

Frequent or recurring infections

Slow healing of cuts and bruises

Excess sleep

Blurred vision

Tingling and numbness in the hands or feet.

If you experience any of the above symptoms, visit a local pharmacy or clinic where a test can be done.
