The South African premiere of the Tony and Grammy Award winning musical The Color Purple will only take place in early 2018 at the Mandela Stage at the Joburg Theatre, but the cast has been secured.

All the 20 South African performers have been contracted for The Color Purple, with the full casting that will be announced next month.

Producers have been tight lipped about exactly who will star in the local production of the Broadway hit, saying they will only announce the cast later this year.

"It might seem unusual to ask artists to commit to a stage show this far in advance but the wonderful reality in South Africa is that you need time in order to sign the best stage talent in the country," Bernard Jay says.

The Color Purple will be directed by Janice Honeyman, with musical direction by Rowan Bakker, production design by Sarah Roberts and lighting design by Mannie Manim.

The Color Purple is fresh off of Broadway and starred Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson in one of the lead roles.
