The Gauteng Department of Education is mourning the loss of a 55-year-old grade 12 marker who died due to Covid-19 complications.

The marker succumbed to the virus at home on Sunday.
"This is the second marker who has passed on while on matric examination papers marking duty.
"We would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the marker; our prayers are with them,” says provincial spokesperson Steve Mabona.

A psycho-social team has been sent to support the family.
The IsiXhosa marker was on duty at the same marking centre, Jeppe High in Johannesburg, which experienced the first loss of a marker last week.
“She was part of the group who were released on 14 January 2021 from marking following the news of the colleague who had collapsed at her accommodation," adds Mabona
