15 Gauteng pupils in hospital after eating ‘space cakes’

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says some 15 pupils from two schools in the province are recovering in hospital after eating cannabis-infused cakes.
The department says eleven grade 12 pupils from Randfontein High School fell sick on Thursday and were rushed to medical facilities.
Two of the pupils returned home while nine were hospitalised.
“It was established that these learners consumed ‘space cakes’ sold by another Grade 12 learner, who is now facing suspension as a result of breaking the school’s code of conduct and endangering the lives of his fellow learners,” the department said on Sunday.
On Saturday, four Grade 12 pupils from Mamellong Secondary School in Tsakane were also suspected to have purchased 'space cakes' on their way to tuition classes.
The four were eventually taken to hospital.
Lesufi says he is concerned.
“We are really concerned and dissatisfied at the ongoing consumption of these ‘space cakes’ where learners become learners sick and are often hospitalised.
"We urge learners to refrain from purchasing or consuming unknown substances that put their health and lives at risk.
"The conditions of these learners is being closely monitored to ensure their speedy recovery and safe return to their families,” adds Lesufi.
