Police spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko said they were employed by Alma construction.
“The suspects, three women and sixteen men, illegally gathered and went on a rampage on the afternoon of Wednesday [19 August 2015] around the mine property in Brits, complaining about their wages. The group allegedly stoned two vehicles of IFM [International Ferro Metals] mine as they were protesting.”
He said the police were called to the scene to restore order and some protesters managed to flee while others were arrested.
“Alma construction is a sub-contractor of IFM and the company is assisting the mine with construction-related duties. The suspects will appear in the Brits Magistrates Court on Friday.”
