The duo, who form part of a group of five police officers who were arrested, appeared in court on Monday.

Warrant Officer Sanku Lovemore Mofokeng (46) and 39-year-old Seargent Daniel Makanyana Podile are accused of attempting to extort R200 000 from a Gauteng resident in February.

They appeared in court after handing themselves over to the Hawks.

Hawks spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mulamu says the two accused stormed the complainant’s house, claiming to be investigating allegations of fake diesel that was being stored in his yard.

"During the encounter they allegedly demanded a R200 000 gratification in order for him not to be arrested.

The complainant alleged that he handed them R50 000 in cash and agreed to pay the balance at a later stage.”

The Hawks arrested the three other co-accused in February.

"The incident was reported to the Hawks who conducted an undercover operation which resulted in the arrest of Seargent Phukubje, Constable Komana, and Rakgatho immediately after the outstanding balance was paid to them," says Mulamu.

All five accused were granted bail and are expected to appear in court on 14 October.
