The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) says they've noted a 49% spike.

Sabric says there have been 232 heists in South Africa between January and August this year alone.

The organisation says they are very concerned about the attacks on cash-in-transit vehicles in the country.

Sabric - which assists banking and cash-in-transit companies combat organised bank-related crimes - say they are worried these numbers might spike as we approach the festive season.

Sabric's operations general manager, Kevin Twiname says it's evident that organised crime has manifested itself within the cash-in-transit industry.

''The fact that we have group sizes in between 10 and 20 criminals attacking these vehicles with automatic firearms, explosives and accompanied violence is of huge concern'', Twiname stresses.

Sabric says they are working closely with the South African Police Services to curb the scourge in cash-in-transit heists.

They are also appealing to members of the community to come forward with any information that will help their investigations in alleviating cash-in-transit heists.
