3 killed, 1 arrested in Mpumalanga robbery

Police in Mpumalanga have shot and killed three suspects and arrested another following a business robbery in Mhluzi, near Middelburg.

Police crime scene

The robbers struck in the early hours of Friday morning.

Mpumalanga police's Brenda Muridili says officers reacted after receiving a tip-off that a group of suspects were planning to rob a business in town.

Upon arrival police found that the suspects had already blown up a safe.

" As police approached there was gunfire. The suspects fled in three vehicles and the police pursued the suspects.

"There was a high-speed chase where there was also an exchange of gunfire. Two of the vehicles came to a halt, one as a result of the driver losing control. Four of the occupants of the vehicle fled the scene on foot."

She says three of the suspects in the second vehicle were shot and killed.

"The police called in our K9 unit and pursued the suspects on foot. One suspect was arrested and the other suspects are still at large."

Police managed to recover two rifles and one pistol.

"The two vehicles that were recovered are suspected to have been stolen," Muridili says.
