42 Covid-19 deaths reported on Boxing Day

The Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal each recorded more than 25% of the country’s new Covid-19 infections in the latest 24-hour reporting period.

This means the Western Cape now sits at a cumulative 581 766 cases after the latest increase of 1 565, while KZN has a cumulative 599 030 cases after an increase of 1 459 new infections. 

 

These coastal provinces remain the hardest hit amid the festive period marked by booming activity at the beaches.

 

In the same reporting period, Gauteng recorded more than 950 new cases. 

 

“Today the institute reports 5 604 new Covid-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 413 540. This increase represents a 27.2% positivity rate,” said the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

 

According to the NICD, there has been an increase of 42 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with public health facilities accounting for the lion’s share of admission. 

 

Just over 40 deaths were also recorded.

 

“As per the National Department of Health, a further 41 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 90 814 to date.”
