80% of people haven’t experienced racism in past 5 years – IRR survey
Updated | By Eva Chipa
The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) held a webinar on social cohesion, anti-xenophobia, tribalism and racism on Tuesday.

Gabriel Crouse, analyst and the institute’s head of campaigns says they recenty held a survey where one of the answered indicated 80% of people haven’t experience racism in the past few years.
“Then we asked, ‘Have you personally experienced any form of racism in the past 5 years’ and 80% of people have said no. 82% of black people said no, 88% of coloured people said no and 70% of white people.”
Crouse says that all forms of discrimination against people based on social identity is unjust and concerning.
“What we tried to do through our survey was to speak to ordinary South Africans with thousands demographically representative with thousands of respondents and see what they have to say, put a microphone in front of the people who never really get a chance to get their voices heard.”
