99 arrested during metered taxi protest

Police have made 99 arrests following an illegal protest on Gauteng highways.

Metered taxi drivers and truck drivers blocked the R21 and R24 highway near OR Tambo International on Friday morning
Gauteng police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini says suspects were arrested on a charge of public violence.
Metered taxi drivers took to the highway in protest of e-cab hailing services like Uber and Taxify.
They say these companies are operating illegally.
Two Uber vehicles were also reportedly torched during the protest.
Protestors blocked the routes to OR Tambo International Airport.
Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng says the protest action started at 03:00.
