Gauteng's flying squad has also been roped in to monitor various Tshwane areas.

Shop owners counted the cost of heavy looting on Tuesday with some saying they've suffered huge losses.

Samkele Maseko reports...

Tshwane residents took to the streets after the ANC announced that Thoko Didiza would stand as ANC mayoral candidate instead of Kgosientso 'Sputla' Ramokgopa.

One resident said he understood why people continued to vent their anger, saying a mayoral candidate was forced on them.

"It's 50/50. I feel very nostalgic about this, because what they are doing is right - but at the same time it's wrong. They are fighting for a man who has power, who has a vision for this place."

A foreign shop owner said innocent people were being victimised.

"I don't understand what these people want. You're talking about the mayor, you're talking about stealing, you're talking about breaking shops and killing innocent people."
