AfriForum pleads for Australia's help over farm murders

The civil rights group AfriForum is campaigning in Canberra over what it believes to be the spate of farm murders in the country.

AfriForum vowed to intensify its efforts until government declare farm murders a disaster.


Representatives of the group is currently in Australia to rally support and create awareness pertaining to the killing of South Africans on farms.


Several engagements have been arranged with representatives of the Australian government.

"We have a government that is in denialism regarding the widespread problem. You cannot solve a problem if you deny that a problem exists," says CEO Kallie Kriel.


The lobby group previously questioned the credibility of the SAPS' crime statistics which paint a different picture to the message spread by Afriforum in various other countries.


The latest crime statistics by the SAPS showed that 62 murders took place on farms and smallholdings in the 2017 / 2018 financial year.


However, Kriel believes these figures are inaccurate.

The Department of International Relations and Corporation (Dirco) has also criticised the group for the continued spreading of false information abroad about the killing of white South Africans.


Kriel however says they have a worthy cause.


He says its not only about the statistics, but the gruesome stories of the victims.

"We have to intensify our efforts to put pressure on the South African government through the international community so that they firstly recognise the program and prioritise it as a crime that need serious attention."
