Last week, the City confirmed that 2500 vehicles have been affected by the end of a fleet contract with Avis, as well as another 2000 from Afrirent.

The vehicles are used by various departments, including police, City Power and Joburg Water.

"We have pledged to sign another extension with CoJ, so that residents can continue to receive the necessary services from the municipality without fear of interruption,” says Afrirent CEO Senzo Tsabedze.

"Our name is being used for political point-scoring, the DA has been working with, and using, Afrirent cars for a years now and we have just agreed to another three-month extension."

Tsabedze says the company has been under attack based on false claims that it had been awarded the tender without following a competitive tender process.

"Afrirent currently supplies fleet services to more than 20 municipalities in South Africa that are led by different political parties, and we have never had issues and why is CoJ an exception? We believe political parties are acting in pursuit of their partial interests as they want to influence the outcome.

"We have a good track record, and we are not a fly-by-night company. In 2023 we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary in the fleet management value chain and such unwarranted negative reporting creates uncertainty with our clients.”
