‘The agenda was tea’ - EFF mum on Malema’s visit to Nkandla

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has remained mum on the conversation between former president Jacob Zuma and leader Julius Malema.

The pair met at Zuma’s Nkandla home in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday after Malema reached out to the former president on social media earlier in the week.

The red berets has refused to divulge what was on the agenda, other than the intended cup of tea between old political foes.

Speaking outside the property, EFF spokesperson Vuyani Pambo kept journalists guessing.

“The tea meeting was about tea. They had tea together and it was a meeting between the former president and the commander-in-chief, there was no agenda as you know.

“The invite said ‘let’s have tea’, so they had tea. There was no discussion around any other thing, around anything you may be imagining. So let’s stop with the gymnastics of speculation and trying to be prophets,” he added.

Malema was also accompanied by EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu and former chairperson, Advocate Dali Mpofu.

“The only thing that has changed is that the commander-in-chief Julius Sello Malema met with the former president to have a cup of tea.”

Prior to the meeting, speculation was rife that Malema would try to twist Zuma’s arm into giving testimony before the commission of inquiry into state capture.

Zuma is heavily implicated by a number of witnesses as being at the helm of the maladministration of state resources.

The former head of state has snubbed the commission on a number of occasions, refusing to give his side of the story.

“There was never a thing or an agenda that was out up. The agenda was tea, a cup of tea so I think you must be patient,” Pambo said.

“You’ll end up burning yourself with this speculation you are making.”

Malema was a fierce critic of Zuma following his expulsion from the party in 2012.

But Pambo described the meeting between the pair as ‘cordial’.

“The mood of the meeting was a nice one. It was very cordial.”
