The man, affectionately known as uncle Kathy, died in hospital this morning.

"We are involved in intense preparations of the funeral that is likely to take place this afternoon," Hanekom says.

He adds that they have been supporting members of Kathrada's family who are very sad.

Kathrada died in the Donald Gordon Hospital in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning after a short period of illness, following surgery to the brain.

"All of the board members have been supporting the family who are experiencing immense sadness," he says.

Hanekom adds that Kathrada was a man who lived an immensely good life and who has made a huge contribution to our democracy and our freedom.

"It was a tireless self-sacrifice from him - a man of great humility. Millions loved him and looked up to him," Hanekom says.

He adds that Kathrada's life should be celebrated.
