Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said about 200 people from the informal settlement blocked the road with stones, burning tyres and other objects on Wednesday in protest against a lack of employment opportunities.

“The community went on a rampage when they barricaded Sunrise Park main road with stones on Wednesday. They allegedly stopped the ambulance and eventually set it alight, but the occupants escaped unharmed. No one has been arrested and investigation into the matter continues.

“Police are monitoring the situation to ensure calm, and no incident was reported today [Thursday],” added Mokgwabone.

Residents allegedly stoned and damaged a municipal vehicle on Sunday after a meeting they had attended with municipal officials failed to reach consensus on demands for employment at the local sewerage plant.

They also allegedly burnt down a structure erected near the sewerage plant which was to have been used as an office for employment.
