ANC adamant elections can be held in October

The African National Congress (ANC) is adamant South Africa will be able to hold successful elections this year despite concerns in some quarters over the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The governing party believes the country will be able to hold free and fair elections in October.
The party's deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte made the party’s submission at the Moseneke inquiry into the possibility to hold free and fair elections.
"Our recommendations are as follows: The Independent Electoral Commission should plan for elections to be held on the 27th of October 2021,” she said.
"It can be done if this wave subsides in time and special voting should be extended to all over forty and to the Sunday before election day."
Earlier, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema argued that the polls must be postponed to next year.
Duarte suggested that the IEC move the elections out by a month should Covid-19 prove to be a problem in October.
"If the restrictions on gatherings are not lifted soon or the wave intensifies, IEC should request the Constitutional Court to postpone for the shortest possible period a minimum of one month or six months."
