ANC and DA to contest Eastern Cape by-election
Updated | By ANA
One by-election is set to take place in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, the Independent Electoral Commission said.
The African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance will compete in a by-election in Ward 5 of the Camdeboo Municipality in Graaf-Reinet in the Eastern Cape.
IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela said on Tuesday that the ward would be contested by Izak Reid of the ANC and Glenda Christina Mackelina of the DA.
The ward was previously represented by DA councillor, Jesmine Swemmber, but then became vacant when her party membership was terminated.
Bapela said voter turnout for the ward in Graaf-Reinet during the 2011 municipal elections was 51.66 percent.
Municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the North West on Wednesday.
The by-elections are being contested by a total of 18 candidates, representing four political parties. Two wards are uncontested.
