Soweto residents are angry and frustrated over load shedding and what they claim to be continuous power cuts by the utility.

The party’s Matshidiso Musitwa says Soweto residents are being hit with more frequent power cuts when Eskom is forced to implement load shedding.

“We are being led tomorrow to Eskom in a march by Sanco and the community on issues affecting them on electricity, prolonged load shedding and the fact that councillors have been engaging with Eskom on resolving on persistent cut-offs for communities, even those who are paying.

“We want Eskom to start engaging us on these issues so that we put finality to them. We have requested the CEO of Eskom and we will see what the response will be. We are representing the communities that had had problems for more than nine months without electricity.”

Musitwa says the march does not form part of the Gauteng shutdown movement, which saw hundreds of Soweto residents taking to the streets on Tuesday.

“We are not joining the shutdown and we are not even encouraging the shutdown. We have not even engaged with the people organising the march. Whoever is coming to our march must not come under the umbrella of the shutdown.”
