ANC in KZN, Limpopo call for Andre De Ruyter’s axing

The ANC in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal have called on the government to give Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter the boot for his "dismal performance".

The country has experienced continuous power cuts for months, which the struggling power utility has blamed on a shortage of generation capacity and breakdowns at power stations.

Leaders from the two provinces briefed the media on Thursday, following a meeting to discuss issues of mutual interest ahead of the party’s national conference in December.

ANC KZN provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo says the leadership agreed that De Ruyter must be fired for his dismal performance.

"We are told that the problem is a shortage of coal, meaning they don't buy coal, not that it is short in the country, but they are stupidly not buying coal because if you go to Richards Bay you will see everyday trucks, tons and tons of coal are exported to other countries Europe, to China.

“The shortage of coal is not that it is short in the country, but they stupidly don't buy coal, that is their own deficiency.

“Secondly, they buy substandard coal and put it into coal-fired plants, then they destroy their own system, which is their stupidity.

“Thirdly, they don't do quality routine maintenance, it is another stupidity that they do, and you know who is that stupid? it is Andre De Ruyter who is the CEO.

Now they removed the board, but the new board will fail because they have got someone who doesn't know what he is doing at Eskom.

Andre De Ruyter, the problem is Andre, they should have fired him, once they fire Andre and get someone who knows how to run this thing and deal with the three major factors that affect their system, then we will have no problem in the country," says Mtolo.
