ANC members gather to celebrate Zuma’s birthday

Members of the African National Congress (ANC) have gathered in Kliptown to celebrate President Jacob Zuma’s 75th birthday.
Zuma was born on the 12th of April 1942 at Nkandla in KwaZulu Natal.
The birthday celebrations comes on the same day as a march by opposition parties to the Union Buildings, to demand that he steps down as President.
But Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane says Zuma must remain focused.
“The President must remain focused and lead not only us members of the ANC, but lead the people of South Africa. What is happening in the country is an indication of what comes with the job of being a leader. We hope he will be able to carry the country beyond where it is,” says Mokonyane.
Umkhonto We Sizwe Military Veterans Association chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe believes the march to the Union Buildings shows the strength of South Africa’s democracy.
“That is democracy at its highest stage. If you see people marching this is what we fought for, this is what President Zuma fought for. So that people can enjoy freedom of speech. It has no impact on the President’s birthday,” says Maphatsoe.
