ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says the party’s national executive committee will meet with former president Thabo Mbeki to address issues raised in a letter sent to the party.

Mbeki wrote a 17-page letter to ANC Deputy President Paul Mashatile, in which he slams the manner in which Phala Phala scandal has been dealt with following a parliamentary probe which found that Ramaphosa had a case to answer.

Ramaphosa is accused of cover-up following theft of half-a-million US dolars at his game farm in February 2020.

In the letter, the former statesman talks about the party's commitment to renewal and ANC policies, the corruption allegations made by former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter, constitutional democracy, and the Nkandla debacle.

"The parliamentary processes, as you know, the three-person panel appointed by Parliament concerning the Phala Phala matter decided that the Comrade President 'had a case to answer' with regard to a process of impeachment.

"What should have followed this is that the National Assembly would have appointed a multi-party committee precisely to investigate the matter of whether the Comrade President did indeed have 'a case to answer'!

"To conclude its work, however long this took, the MPC would approach the National Assembly to recommend whether the president should be impeached or not," said Mbeki in the letter.

Mbalula labelled the leaking of the letter as regrettable, adding that the ANC will only comment once they have met with Mbeki.

"The national officials will discuss the later and seek audience with former president and it is only there that the ANC will consider a commentary on the contents of the letter and discussions with Mbeki.

"We don’t intend to run the organisation through letters. Political matters should be ventilated and be engaged openly with the leadership. Mbeki is our veteran and when he raises views and concerns we have to listen and give him our side of the story, there is no need for anyone to get into an altercation because the letter was leaked."
