The secretary general  - who has served in the position for ten years - said preparations for the 54th ANC national elective conference, in Nasrec south of Johannesburg, proved ''particularly difficult''.

His statement comes after the media quizzed him amid allegations of bogus delegates and court challenges barring certain provincial branch members from taking part in the election process of ANC president.

''I saw signs of those dirty tricks as we were coming to this conference in everyone who was contending and contesting any position and we said that's what politics is all about.''

Mantashe also spoke about state capture, arguably the most pertinent issue currently facing the ANC, adding it's one problem causing division in the party.

''State capture is one debate that contiues to divide us because it imposes a responsibility on the leadership of the ANC to engage in that debate and find a common and coherent response to it,'' says Mantashe

Mantashe presented his last Organisational Report at the ANC 54th National Conference in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

He said the incoming national executive committee (NEC) will find his report with feedback on every issue that the party has faced, including the allegations of state capture and responses to the damning Constitutional Court rulings subsequent to this.

Mantashe may however return to the ANC top six leadership. He was nominated by 1 499 branches and will be contesting the position of national chairperson against Nathi Mthethwa who was elected by 807 branches.
