ANC in Tshwane case withdrawal unsurprising: DA

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane has described as unsurprising the decision by the African National Congress (ANC) to withdraw the case against council speaker Katlego Mathebe and chief whip Christo van der Heever.

On Thursday, the ANC filed an application in the high court in Pretoria to rescind the appointment of Zweli Khumalo as acting council speaker.

The DA’s Mpho Mehlape-Zimu says the party believed from the onset that the case had now merit.

“Remember what they are doing now, is to challenge every ruling by the speaker so that they can derail service delivery and our work to try and provide services to the City of Tshwane.

“But that will not work, what we know is that the resolutions of the speaker and the decisions of the speaker have stood the test of time and they know that. That is why they decided to withdraw the case,” says Mehlape-Zimu.

Mehlape-Zimu says the decision to appoint an acting speaker was taken in January 2017.

“It a resolution of the council that the ANC participated in… they also put up a candidate in the candidate roll.

“What now is frustrating is the fact that they are challenging a decision that they part took in very nicely. And they recognised in the absence of the speaker Zweli come in and presides over the meeting.”

ANC in Tshwane to challenge appointment of deputy speaker

The party is asking the court to rescind the appointment of Zweli Khumalo as acting council speaker. The ANC's regional chairperson in Tshwane, Kgosi Maepa, says the appointment of Khumalo was an unconstitutional decision. He believes Mathebe abused her powers by appointing Khumalo.

Mehlape-Zimu says there is an attempt by the ANC in the city, in conjunction with Cooperative Governance MEC Lebogang Maile, to overthrow the DA-led government.
