ANC’s call for fresh elections unrealistic - analyst

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has called for fresh elections to be held in Johannesburg and Tshwane.

Tshwane, Pretoria, Johannesburg

The party briefed the media in Johannesburg on Sunday, saying elections are the only way to undo what it believes to be the damage caused by the Democratic Alliance (DA) led coalition in the two metros.

But political analyst Levy Ndou believes the ANC is also to blame for the political instability experienced by the two metros, with its insistence to call continuous motions of no confidence in the DA mayors.

The last motion of no confidence is against Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimaga and is expected to be heard on Thursday.

Another cause of instability is a focus by the DA on rectifying the previous administration's mistakes.

"And not focusing on the actual services that must be delivered to the ordinary citizen,” says Ndou.

He believes the ANC is unrealistic in its call early for by-elections in Johannesburg and Tshwane and that the party should instead focus on next year’s elections.

Part of the ANC's strategy in the run-up to the polls might be to highlight the DA's mistakes in order to garner more of the vote, he says.

"The ANC has to focus on building its structures and branches so that when they go to the elections. They are more oiled."

Ndou says, rather than focussing on the DA, the ANC should develop a robust political program that is focused on the issues affecting ordinary voters.
