ANC's Gauteng conference continues after failed court challenge

The application was brought by Jabulani Sithole, a member of the Mzwakhe Ngomane branch, which was one of the branches whose votes were quarantined during the Ekhurhuleni elective conference in May.

The matter was struck from the roll by the High Court late Saturday evening.

Speaking after the court ruling, outgoing provincial secretary-general David Makhura confirmed that the conference will now go ahead as scheduled.

"We want to make sure that everybody participates in the conference of the ANC, because this is about rebuilding and renewing the ANC," Makhura said.

"But we also want to ensure that people who are here have really passed through these rigorous gates of the ANC. We have lots of gates that you have to pass through for this.

"The other thing we also have are dispute resolution mechanisms - regional, provincial and national dispute resolution committees.

"We've gone through these processes, that's the basis of our confidence.

"Our national office and the province have been quite clear that we would be able to say before any court that our processes have been fair."

ANC spokesperson, Pule Mabe, said they were never in doubt that the outcome would go their way.

"When we had received an indication that we were going to be served with papers seeking to interdict the 14th provincial conference of Gauteng, we indicated that we are comfortable and confident that processes of the ANC are foolproof, sufficient enough to withstand any form of scrutiny and that we were also looking forward to the court ruling in our favour," Mabe said

"We are not saying this because we are arrogant, but we are saying this because we have been watching the trend over the last few cases that have been brought forward."

The elective conference is scheduled to come to a close on Sunday with the announcement of the top office-bearers.
