Government has granted yet another month-long extension for the national state of disaster.

The new extension will run until 15 January 2022.
Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele briefed the media on Thursday following the outcomes of the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
“The national state of disaster is aimed at responding to the special circumstances presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Since the emergence of the Omicron variant at the beginning of December, the country has been on tenterhooks on the possibility of more stringent Covid-19 measures ahead of the festive season.
However Gungubele says the cabinet has not yet spoken about the tightening of regulations.
"So far the reports we are getting is that there is no red flag in that. That is why vaccination is becoming so important so that we can live with this Coronavirus. Because we need to find a balance between our livelihoods and lives because these are the same two sides of the same coin."
