A frequency network breakdown led to several flight delays over the weekend.

According to ATNS, the breakdown affected the navigation and communication of various aircraft, resulting in a backlog and the delay of numerous flights on Saturday.

However, no flights were cancelled due to the breakdown.

ANTS Head of Corporate Services and Communications Phindile Chauke said the network is expected to be fully restored by the end of the week.

“Over the weekend, we lost connectivity that enables our air traffic controllers to communicate with aircraft, and as a result, we had to intervene by ensuring that we managed the delays that were on the ground where the departure of the aircraft was disrupted because of the disconnection of our communication”.

Chauke said additional air traffic controllers were deployed.

“However, about 80% of the system has since been restored, and work continues to ensure that the rest of it is fully restored. The delays that we experienced on the ground are also currently being managed. When something like this happens, there is a 5-minute delay that is introduced in the system of flights whether they are landing or taking off. We’ve had to bring in more traffic controllers as well.

“We anticipate that everything should be back to normal by the end of this week.”
