The trial of a man accused of killing three people with an axe is expected to continue in the Durban High Court on Monday.
Phindile Joseph Ntshongwana was charged with murder after allegedly hacking three people to death with an axe in 2011. He is further accused of kidnapping and raping a woman on November 28, 2010, and faces two charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
He was sent for mental assessment after his father Liston told the court his son had psychiatric problems.
In June 2011, a decision was taken to admit him to the Fort Napier Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, where a state psychologist and a private psychiatrist examined him. The doctors concluded he was fit to stand trial.
Ntshongwana was arrested at his parents’ house in Yellowwood Park, Durban. One of his alleged victims was decapitated and his head dumped in a bin.
