BMA on alert amid fresh protests at Mozambique border
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Border Management Authority says it is monitoring the situation in Mozambique following reports of protests affecting the Rissano Garcia border.
The protest has led to the partial closure of the road, affecting the movement of trucks.
The Lebombo border was shut down earlier this month following violent post-election protests in the neighbouring country.
BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi warned that the road remained inaccessible to trucks.
"Despite the deployment of the Mozambican Defense Force and police to the area, the disruptions on the Mozambican side have affected operations at the Lebombo port of entry, impacting the movement of trucks in particular," added BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato.
"BMA officials are able to process pedestrians and small vehicles for movement in and out of the Lebombo port.
"We urge freight forwarders (trucks) planning to use this route today to make alternative arrangements and exercise patience as efforts continue to resolve the situation.”
