Body of Eastern Cape girl (4) found in school pit toilet

Amnesty International South Africa has called on government to act with urgency to eradicate all pit toilets from schools and communities.

Pit toilet
ER24

This after the death of a four-year-old girl in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

Her body was found inside a pit latrine at her school in Glen Grey.

The girl was found after her mother went to the school to enquire about her whereabouts after she did not return home on Monday.

Amnesty International's Executive Director Shenilla Mohamed says the tragedy occurred a week after the Department of Basic Education missed its deadline to get rid of illegal pit toilets from schools.

"The police are investigating the circumstances of the child's death, but whatever the outcome, these illegal pit toilets are dangerous and are not only violating the right to sanitation but also the right to health, education, dignity and privacy, whilst in some case pose a serious risk to right to life all of which are enshrined in the constitution.

“The DBE must urgently provide and update on how many illegal pit toilets remain in South Africa."
