Bogus cop arrested in JHB

Johannesburg Central police have arrested a 45-year-old woman for impersonating a police officer, Gauteng police said on Sunday.
The woman was arrested at the Ottawa Mall when officers attending a complaint in the same building saw a woman wearing a police uniform “in a wrong way with school shoes”, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said.
She was also wearing the rank insignia of a police captain. Police asked for her appointment certificate and she failed to produce it.
“She further told the police that she is working at Johannesburg Central police station. An investigation is underway and she will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.”
Mbele said it was a serious offence to impersonate a police official. “Bogus cops are damaging the image of the police.”
Co-operation between police and the community could help prevent “bogus cops in our policing precinct”, Mbele said.
