Botswana suffers national blackout, resorts to load shedding as it recovers
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The Botswana Power Cooperations (BPC) was forced to implement rotational load shedding on Monday, following a countrywide blackout.
The country experienced a blackout just after midnight.
In a statement released on Monday, the country's power utility said a “grid disturbance” caused an outage at both Morupule A and B Power plants, as well as the Transmission Power Line that connects Botswana to South Africa.
"We are currently undertaking investigations to determine the cause of the grid disturbance,” they say.
The Corporation said at the time of the grid disturbance, the Country was generating 505MW of electricity and exporting 60MW.
“We are currently restarting both of our power generation plants," says the BPC.
The BPC requested the public to switch off non-essential electrical equipment such as geysers, electric stoves, heaters, air conditioners, and swimming pool pumps.
