Busisiwe Mavuso was doing her job, says former Scopa chair Godi

The former chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Account (Scopa) Temba Godi says Eskom board member Busisiwe Mavuso was well within her rights to blame the failures of the ANC-led government for Eskom’s woes.

Mavuso is gaining support following her heated confrontation at a Scopa meeting over the ailing state-owned power utility.

Mavuso was asked to leave the meeting after she blamed the ANC-led government for Eskom’s woes.

The battle continues to play out with the former Scopa chair, Temba Godi, throwing his weight behind Mavuso.

Mkhuleko Hlengwa is expected to tender an apology to Mavuso after conceding that the matter could’ve been handled better.

Mavuso told members of Scopa during the meeting last week that the Eskom board cannot be the fall guy for this ANC-led government as the power utility grapples with the aftermath of state capture and historic failures.

“This is not the first she has mentioned political inference before Scopa, and on both occasions, no one seems to be interested to find out what is wrong,” says Godi.

Godi believes Mavuso was well within her rights to make the assertion.

He has also questioned the reaction of the Public Enterprises Department, saying she has “hit the wrong nerve”.

The department dubbed Mavuso’s conduct as “regrettable and unbecoming of a member of a board which is the accounting authority".

“Their response seemed like they are lashing out, threatening and being intimidatory which makes it even more suspicions that indeed she might be saying something that has substance,” says Godi.
