Call to aid Africa's biggest refugee crisis
Updated | By Maryke Vermaak
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has made an urgent call for international assistance in Tanzania as refugee camps are now filled to capacity.
There has been a five-fold increase in the amount of people crossing into Tanzania from Burundi over the past four months.
The forecast is that the number of people in these refugee camps will be more than 280,000 by December - and is fast becoming Africa's biggest refugee crisis.
The camps housing Congolese and Burundian refugees are increasingly overstretched.
MSF's head of communications for Southern Africa, Borrie La Grange explains housing, water and sanitation are inadequate in these camps.
"What's really concerning about this, for us, is that this presents an increased risk of malaria to spread in the camp population. The rainy season is approaching and we are expecting that there may be a spike in the number of malaria cases," says La Grange.
La Grange says international assistance is urgently needed.
"Tanzania has kept is borders open and has fortunately accepted more refugees to arrive and to find safe refuge, but they can no longer do it alone," says La Grange.
