Calls for UkhoziFM DJ to be axed over Facebook comments
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
A petition is doing the rounds calling for Ukhozi FM radio presenter Khathide Ngobe, better known as MC Tshatha, to be axed.
This comes after Ngobe in a Facebook post said men are always called dogs, but women dress in a way that makes men lust over them.
In the post, Ngobe says women who wear revealing clothes demean their image in society and send the wrong message to potential husbands.
Sethabile Hlanti, who started the petition alongside other activists, says Ngobe’s comments contribute to rape culture.
“His post suggests it’s the burden of women to make sure they are respected by men. He actually says that you cannot expect to be dressed in a revealing manner and not have men lust over you. You cannot tell a woman they need to dress a certain way for men not treat her with respect,” says Hlanti.
Ngobe apologised on his Facebook page, but Hlanti says the apology is not sincere and harsher action should be taken.
“After complaining to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission and the Ukhozi FM station manager, his apology was not even an apology. This is a person in a position of power and influence, he didn’t not write an apology, it was a placation to get people off his back” says Hlanti
[To those who were offended about yesterday's post regarding the ladies who wore clothing revealing their bodies, I apologise. I apologise to the ladies on the photo too. My purpose was to warn ladies about the importance of respecting themselves. To some, that did not go down well so I say apologies]
Ukhozi FM programming manager Zandile Tembe sent this email in response to Hlanti’s complaint.
Hlanti says Ngobe’s Facebook posts are fuelled with homophobia and misogyny, but there have been no consequences.
“If people can be outraged over racism, why are they silent about rape culture and misogyny, especially when it is fuelled by people in a position of power and influence like Ngobe? South Africa can do more by speaking out and taking action against such attacks on women,” says Hlanti.
Ngobe and Ukhozi FM could not be reached for comment at the time of publishing.
