The storm has wreaked havoc across the province since Tuesday night, uprooting trees, damaging roofs and schools, blowing away shacks and flooding hundreds of homes.

The City of Cape Town's JP Smith says officials will be assessing the damage in areas affected by the storm.

Smith says the bulk of the crisis is now over.

"As of this morning, the disaster operations centre stood down, which means it's no longer activated with all the staff from the different departments there," says Smith.

Smith says the city will commence with mop up efforts.

"The disaster management still have to assist the people who are in various halls and facilities, but the bulk of the crisis is over," says Smith.

Smith says the rain has not led to any flooding.

"Disaster management officials will be assessing communities and known hotspots across the city to see if there are flooding interventions required," says Smith.
