Cape taxi strike suspended
Updated | By Heart FM News
The Western Cape Transport Department has confirmed that the taxi strike has been suspended.
The strike saw an almost total shutdown of taxi services in Cape Town on Monday morning
There were several road closures due to protests seemingly linked to the strike.
Two buses, one operated by Golden Arrow, and one that was part of the MyCiti fleet, were torched in separate incidents.
Provincial transport MEC, Donald Grant, says he met with taxi association, Santaco, and other minibus taxi industry representatives earlier, where an agreement was reached to end the strike.
"We regret the violence and the destruction of public transport assets. However, I am very grateful to the people who met with us this morning and came to a solution in terms of the way forward. It's going to be a process of mediation."
Taxi drivers are disgruntled about law enforcement impounding their vehicles.
Taxi drivers in Tshwane were also expected to down tools on Monday.
However, there was no sign of taxis striking or causing any disruptions in the area.
Taxi drivers originally threatened to march to the Union Buildings on Monday and hand over a memorandum with their demands to scrap their outstanding fines.
