Cele: NCCC to discuss non-compliance of Covid-19 protocols
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
Police Minister Bheki Cele has warned that law enforcement will be clamping down on South Africans who fail to wear face masks.
Cele briefed the community of Du Noon in the Western Cape during a festive season safety campaign on Thursday.
There is growing concern around South Africans’ failure to comply with Covid-19 health protocols amid the surge in infections in parts of the country.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Thursday that the country has entered the second wave of infections and warned that if South Africa’s current Covid-19 trajectory continues, the country’s healthcare systems will be overwhelmed.
Cele says those who refuse to wear face masks will be prosecuted.
“People don’t put the mask, but they have them on their pockets. It’s very rare that when you ask where is your mask, and the person respond that they don’t have the mask. So it is not the question of unavailability and not a question of affordability, is a question of non-compliance.
“So, we will be taking this, I am a member of the National Coronavirus Command Council and we will be taking that to say we need to get an extra effort for people to put their masks on.”
The National Command Council (NCCC) is set to discuss possible revised lockdown regulations for the upcoming festive season during its meeting on Thursday
