Charges dropped against McBride, co-accused

The National Prosecuting Authority has dropped its charges against the head of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Robert McBride.

The case relates to an IPID report into the involvement of Hawks officials in the illegal rendition of Zimbabwean nationals in 2010.

McBride and two investigators, Matthew Sesoko and Innocent Khuba, faced charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

The IPID boss was suspended by the police minister over the same report - a decision later declared invalid by the courts.

McBride's lawyer, Jac Marais, says the state had no witnesses or evidence to offer the court.

"It's the end of this case. Mr McBride and his two co-accused have suffered greatly through this process, so they would be looking at taking legal advice on whether to institute malicious prosecution," says Marais.
