President Jacob Zuma announced in his State of the Nation Address that government will be signing outstanding power purchase agreements with renewable-energy IPPs.

This led to hundreds of coal truck drivers disrupting traffic in Pretoria as they headed to the Union Buildings to hand over a memorandum on 1 March.

CTF's Mary Phadi told the media at a press briefing this morning that they have taken legal steps to ensure they are not caught off guard.

"We have sought legal advice as a preventative measure to avoid surprises while we are in the process of engaging and on the other hand Eskom signs the agreements," said Phadi.

Phadi said they filed an application with the High Court against Eskom, the Department Public Enterprise, the Department of Energy, and National Treasury seeking the review of the implementation of agreements with IPPs.

"We will not sit back and allow our people losing their jobs. We will pursue any matter that will be able to be of assistance. We feel, as an organisation, that things are going the way we would want them to go and we know that we will be able to achieve our goal," said Phadi.
