The Constitutional Court has ordered the polls to be held between 27 October and 1 November.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) approached the highest court in the land to ask for permission to postpone the elections to no later than February.
The request was made based on the report by former deputy chief justice, which found that if the elections continue in October, it won't be free and fair.
This is mostly due to concerns around the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the polls.
The proclamation of the election date of 27 October has also been declared unconstitutional, invalid and was set aside.
The IEC has been ordered to conduct a voter registration weekend.
Cooperative Governance Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma must now proclaim the new date of the elections not earlier than 10 September.
Eligible voters who wish to register may apply to do so at the relevant municipal office from Friday until 10 September.
If the electoral body finds that it's not practically possible - a proclamation must be issued that people will be able to register from the 10th of September at the relevant municipal office.
