A police officer and two suspects have been killed in a shootout on Johannesburg’s East Rand.
Nineteen others were arrested in the shootout between police and a gang of suspects near Carnival City in Brakpan.
Acting police commissioner in Gauteng Tommy Mthombeni says the police received a tip-off Friday morning.
The suspects are believed to be linked to cash-in-transit heists and other violent crimes in the province.
One police officer also died during the shootout.
“On approaching the house, shooting ensured. During that process there were two suspects who were fatally wounded, 19 suspects were rounded up and arrested,” says Mthombeni.
“During that process we recovered seven rifles, which includes three R5s, four AK47s, two pistols, four explosive chargers ready for use. During that process some of the suspects jumped on the other side leading into the other street where a suspect hijacked a car driven by a lady. Then again a shooting ensured and one of our member was fatally wounded.”
