Cope: Zuma must give assurance on legal costs
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
The Congress of the People (Cope) and United Democratic Movement (UDM) want President Jacob Zuma to set aside R1 million as security costs ahead of his appeal in the state capture case.

The two opposition parties have filed court papers requesting security from President Zuma before he goes ahead with his appeal against the North Gauteng High Court's state capture judgment.
Both parties fear President Zuma will not be able to pay the legal costs should his latest appeal be unsuccessful.
The court previously ruled that Zuma's review application of former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's recommendations in her State of Capture report was ill-advised and reckless.
He has since appealed certain parts of the judgement.

Cope's Mosiuoa Lekota says they have filed an application requesting Zuma to pay R1 million before the court hears the appeal.
"He is very reckless. Especially because even the court indicated that his application was vexatious. Vexatious because he had refused to respect the provisions of the Constitution by refusing to comply with the orders and remedial action of the Public Protector."

Lekota says the political parties want assurances that the president will be able to pay their legal costs.
"His party has already taken a decision that he must vacate office. Which means he is going to be without income. We need to be guaranteed that he is not just taking us into this and afterwards he has nothing to pay us."
