Cops on bikes to protect students
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanaga launched a new bicycle unit within the Tshwane Metro Police Department in Hatfield on Wednesday.
The bicycle unit has been established to strengthen partnerships with the anti-crime community.
The City has partnered with nearby businesses in Hatfield who will work with the metro police officers to deal with criminal elements in the area.
"The bicycles will assist greatly with frequent patrols and fighting crime around Hatfield which is typically an area dense with students" says mayoral spokesman Samkelo Mgobozi.
The unit currently has 20 bicycles for a start, that will be divided in shifts to patrol the area.
In due course CCTV cameras will be installed. The move is expected to reduce the high number of thefts and robberies prominent in the area.
