Zamdela police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder, and suicide, Free State police said on Sunday.
A 38-year-old woman from Rossetenville in Johannesburg allegedly went to her boyfriend’s house in Germiston at about 6.30pm on Saturday to ask for milk for their eight-month-old baby, Lieutenant Livhuhani Hani said in a statement.
“It is alleged that the man told the complainant to get in to the car so they can go to the police to make an affidavit that he wants to take the baby from the mother.
“The [woman] went with him and he drove to Sasolburg near Koppies Road, at about [8.30pm] he stepped out of the car and took out a knobkerrie and a firearm and told the [woman] that he is going to kill both of them. He hit her and the baby with the knobkerrie on the head and body,” Hani said.
He also fired two shots before driving away leaving the mother and child. The woman walked to the main road with the baby in her arms, “until she noticed that the baby has stopped breathing”. She was found by a passerby who alerted the police.
The police launched a search for the suspect and came across the body of a man hanging from a tree “with the vehicle of the suspect next to the body”. The body was believed to be that of the suspect but “can only be identified after formal identification”, Hani said.
