The union has been threatening to close schools due to teachers in various provinces testing positive for Covid-19.

It believes children should rather stay at home.

Chairperson of Cosas in Tshwane Surprise Mokgothu says the campaign of shutting down schools in the capital city has been successful.

"We have 15 high schools in Mamelodi and since this day came about we've been closing down schools and teachers have been responding positively even the learners themselves have been responding positively.

"I can assure you that the shutdown of schools today in Mamelodi and the entire diaspora of Tshwane and the entire of Gauteng is a success because we are speaking with our comrades."

He claims that members of teachers union who are opposed the national shutdown have been paid by the government.
